Expanding Horizons: The Role of Virtual Exchange in Language Learning and Global Competence

This symposium will bring together educators, researchers, and practitioners to explore the transformative impact of virtual exchange on language learning and global competence. Through presentations, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, attendees will gain insights into innovative strategies and best practices for integrating virtual exchange into educational programs.

Participation is free to all.

A group of highly respected researchers from different parts of the world have been invited to share their knowledge and insights in the field of Virtual Exchange.

Symposium Location

The symposium will be held at the Hannan University satellite campus on the 23rd floor of the Abeno Harukasu building in central Osaka, JAPAN.

Call for Papers

We are pleased to announce that the Call for Papers for Expanding Horizons: The Role of Virtual Exchange in Language Learning and Global Competence is now open. We invite researchers, educators, and practitioners to present their original research and insights on topics related to virtual exchanges and the role of technology in these exchanges. Virtual Exchange has expanded rapidly in the post-COVID era and now international exchanges are becoming more popular, be they synchronous, asynchronous, use text, audio, video or multimodal formats.

The conference language will be English. However, presentations are not limited to exchanges involving English. Those focussing on exchanges in any or all languages are welcomed.

 

Relevant topics include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Designing effective virtual exchange projects for language learners

  • Assessing language learning outcomes in VE contexts

  • Student engagement, motivation, and identity in intercultural online communication

  • Teacher roles, training, and support in VE initiatives

  • Technological tools and platforms for VE in language education

  • Equity, access, and inclusion in global virtual exchange partnerships

  • Intercultural competence development through VE

  • The role of AI in VE

  • Challenges and lessons learned from implementing VE projects​​

Submit a 250-word abstract and 50 word bio in an MS Word file to: mp@hannan-u.ac.jp
